On the evening of Thursday, January 18, 2018, the Tarjuma community lost one of our founding members. After a sudden fatal car collision, Sana Ayesha Ghani, returned to the mercy of her Lord as she was coming home to visit her family in Edmonton, returning from Cadotte Lake Reserve, where she served as a teacher. She was 29 years old.
Sana was an activist, artist, actor, writer, orator, thinker and a human being who gave freely to others. Sana studied sociology, pedagogy, drama, philosophy, critical theory, literature, history, religious studies, mysticism, Biblical Hebrew, Classical Arabic, poetry, Martha Beck life coach training, and clowning. She loved creative exploration. She loved writing. She completed her Master’s degree project on the Danish cartoon controversy, the history of images, and Orientalism. She spent time visiting Sufi sites and writing about the nature of sacred space. She spent a summer in Kenya working with Theatre of the Oppressed techniques. And she spent another summer at an anarchist commune making puppets and performing in a circus. She was a seeker in the truest sense of the word and her legacy will continue to inspire us and many others around the world.
Donations to the Sana Ghani Legacy Fund will be allocated to continue Sana’s work within indigenous and Muslim communities, and especially at Cadotte Lake School. The first $2000 will be used to purchase gifts for Sana’s students.
In honour of Sana’s legacy, additional funds will be used to issue grants to teachers on reserves pursuing innovative initiatives with their classes. More information is forthcoming.
